What has competency-based assessment given us, and where does it still fall short? In this episode, host Leslie Fall, MD talks with Eric Holmboe, MD, CEO of Intealth and a leading force behind the ACGME’s Competency Milestones, about 25 years of work to change how we assess clinical learners. Dr. Holmboe shares his path from the Navy and a clerkship directorship into assessment, explains the quality and safety concerns that drove the six general competencies, and describes the decision to launch the milestones before they were perfect and learn along the way. He also reflects on the limits of any framework, the “whitespace” educators must fill themselves, and his current work at Intealth on global work-based assessment and the question of what readiness means for international medical graduates.
