AI Transparency Statement: Our Commitment to Responsible AI Development and Use

At Aquifer, we believe students and educators deserve to know how artificial intelligence (AI) supports their teaching and learning. This statement explains how we use AI, who oversees it, and how we protect your data.

Our Approach to AI at Aquifer

Our AI vision is to thoughtfully support learning that is grounded in clinical education, guided by educators, and designed with purpose.

What makes Aquifer different is how intentionally we build both our content and product. AI is used only where it meaningfully enhances learning and is developed in close partnership with educators.

We are committed to transparency, ethics, and privacy. Learners and educators deserve clarity about how AI is used and confidence that their data is protected.

Most importantly, humans remain at the center. Educators shape the learning experience. AI serves as a supportive tool, not to replace, but to scale and share their expertise.

How We Build AI Features

Like all of our work at Aquifer, our use of AI is intentional, and keeps people at the center of both the work and the objectives.

AI Learning Developed by Experts

Aquifer’s education designers work closely with Aquifer's Consortium—a talented and experienced group of over 100 academic educators from leading institutions—to develop every AI prompt and feature for student learning. This ensures Aquifer's AI aligns with proven educational principles, clinical best practices, and learning objectives mapped to national curriculum and standards.

Design & Testing Before Approval

The Consortium builds, updates, and maintains each course on a case-by-case basis through a rigorous process. Every AI interaction is crafted by our team of education designers working closely with each of our case editors to support specific learning objectives and competencies. Before any AI feature reaches students, it undergoes thorough evidence-based design and testing and receives final approval from Consortium members who are experts in health professions education.

Human Oversight

Our team routinely reviews AI feature performance and student and educator feedback to identify and address any issues promptly. Health professions education experts from our Consortium regularly evaluate AI outputs to ensure accuracy, appropriateness, and educational value. We actively encourage and respond to feedback about AI features. Your insights help us improve.

Where We Use AI

At Aquifer, AI powers two key features designed to enhance students’ learning experience. Additionally, it is used for an assistant to streamline educators' work:

Virtual Patient Encounters

AI enables realistic patient interviews and delivers immediate feedback on students' information gathering, communication, and initial clinical reasoning.

Summary Statement Feedback

AI provides personalized feedback on clinical summary statements, helping students to refine their clinical reasoning and presentation skills.

AI Assistant

AI powers our assistant to support educators with planning and course development.

How We Protect and Support You

We are here for you, from the work we do to build our platform, to the steps we take to ensure your data is secure, to the team we have ready to answer your questions and help with implementation.

AI Models We Use

We currently use OpenAI's models to power our features.

Data Privacy

Aquifer partners exclusively with enterprise AI providers that contractually agree not to retain your data or use it to train their models. Your interactions remain private and are used solely to support your learning. We carefully vet all AI providers to ensure they meet strict data privacy and security standards.

Questions or Concerns

We're committed to transparency and continuous improvement. If you have questions about how we use AI or suggestions for how we can do better, please contact us at support@aquifer.org.
