This is a podcast for health professions educators who believe that clinical learning is a worthy passion — and worth reimagining.

Each episode, I sit down with a visionary educator, researcher, or innovator who is doing exactly that: seeing a need and finding the courage to fill it — asking hard questions, testing bold ideas, and building something better in the middle of some of the most disruptive times our field has ever seen.

These are not theoretical conversations. They are real-world, boots-on-the-ground dialogues with people who are closest to the work — and who, in my experience, are best positioned to lead the way forward. Expect honest debate, diverse viewpoints, and voices from across and beyond the academy.

There is a quiet reckoning underway in health professions education. These playbooks are the practical companion to our Future of Clinical Learning blog series. Where the blog seeds the big-picture ides, each playbook turns one of those ideas into a hands-on curriculum strategy tool — a short, self-guided framework that curriculum leaders, clerkship directors, and clinical education teams can use to take a snapshot of their current design, spot where things are working or competing, and choose one feasible change to test. Each is scoped to real constraints (limited time, variable sites, competing requirements) and shows where Aquifer can support the work without asking educators to rebuild everything from scratch. 

Playbook 2: Balancing Test Prep and Clinical Learning — COMING SOON!
Test preparation and clinical learning are complementary goals, but limited time and the visible weight of exam scores can make them feel like competitors. This playbook helps course teams take a “balance snapshot,” identify whether their two goals are currently competing, running in parallel, or reinforcing each other, and then choose one course-level change to bring them into better alignment. It spans MD, DO, NP, and PA education and centers on designing learning so that preparing for the exam also strengthens the reasoning and patient-centered care learners will need in practice.

Robust clinical education depends on intentional variability — different patients, preceptors, settings, and workflows. This playbook helps educators ensure that variability doesn’t crowd out foundational learning, so every learner gets consistent, comparable opportunities to build core knowledge, clinical reasoning, and professional readiness. It offers a practical curriculum strategy framework for keeping both consistency and variability working in service of clinical learning.
